The Job Shadowing Program offers GerBI members a valuable opportunity to visit another core facility, teaching lab, or research environment and gain hands-on insights while strengthening exchange within the imaging community.
The program supports focused learning and collaboration in areas such as:

-
Operational procedures and workflows in core facilities
-
Educational and teaching activities
-
Specialized imaging and image processing techniques
Eligibility & Program Scope
-
The person undertaking the job shadowing must be a GerBI member.
-
The host core facility, teaching lab, or research group does not need to be a GerBI member.
-
At least one of the job shadowing partners must be based in Germany.
In very rare and well-justified cases, job shadowing outside Germany may be approved by the GerBI board on a case-by-case basis.
Funding Conditions
-
GerBI supports travel and accommodation costs up to a maximum of €500 per person.
-
Train travel is reimbursed for standard (2nd class) tickets; higher travel classes are not supported.
-
Accommodation costs are reimbursed in line with the provisions of the Landesreisekostengesetz Baden-Württemberg.
-
Sustainable travel is strongly encouraged: travel by plane is generally not supported and will only be considered in exceptional and well-justified cases.
-
The total budget available for the Job Shadowing Program is €3,000 per year.
-
Travel costs need to be paid by the person undertaking job shadowing and will be refunded (hand in your receipts 3 months after the event latest, or if possible within the solar year).
Benefit to the Community
A central goal of the program is knowledge sharing. Applicants are therefore expected to describe how the job shadowing experience will benefit their home facility, institution, or the wider GerBI community, for example through improved workflows, training activities, or dissemination of expertise.
If you are interested in participating, please submit an application outlining your planned activities and expected benefits via the form below. The GerBI board will review applications and provide feedback within a few weeks.
If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to contact the GerBI office. And if you would like to become a member, use this link for more information and fill out the membership form.
